What Is World Kars Day and Why Is It Celebrated?
World Kars Day is a special day celebrated every year on October 30 to strengthen cultural bonds among people from Kars living across the globe, preserve Kars’ rich historical heritage, and foster unity and solidarity within the diaspora.
Why Was October 30 Chosen and How Was It Declared?
The choice of October 30 is rooted in historical significance. October 30, 1920, marks the day Kars was liberated from enemy occupation under the command of General Kazım Karabekir.
To honor this pivotal victory and connect the global Kars community under a shared identity, the anniversary of the liberation of Kars was officially embraced and proclaimed as World Kars Day.
When Did It Start and Whose Idea Was It?
While the liberation of Kars has long been celebrated locally, the vision to transform October 30 into an internationally recognized "World Kars Day" was put forward by journalist and writer Mehmet Ali Arslan. Supported by non-governmental organizations and the Kars community, it gained widespread institutional recognition and public adoption in 2024, becoming an established global tradition.
